Textmaster
Outcomes Met: Grade 5 Science 5-4-18 , Grade 5 Math
Textmasters can be used in any subject area, however, math might be a subject that would be a little more difficult to do this in. Students are placed in groups of four and given a schedule of the reading of an upcoming chapter, for example on climatic regions around the world. All students read the same section of the book but complete a role sheet to guide their point of view: Discussion Director, Summarizer, Vocabulary Enricher, and Webmaster. Once students have finished the chapter, they meet together to share their roles and discuss what they gathered from the reading. 1. Form students into groups of 4-5 (Depending on the size of your class, some groups may have more students and jobs need to be doubled up, example having 2 summarizers instead of 1). 2. Hand out Textmaster Role Sheets. 3. Have students decide which role they want: Discussion Director, Summarizer, Vocabulary Enricher, or Webmaster (or you can assign students their roles). 4. Have students read the chapter and fill in their portion of the Textmaster role sheets. This is done individually. 5. Once students have completed their role sheet, have them gather as a group and discuss their perspectives on the reading that they did.
