Group Writing
Outcomes Met: Grade 5 Science 5-4-17, Grade 5 Math 5.PR.1.
The group writing strategy can be used in any subject area. The group writing strategy is usually used when it is an easy writing assignment. Groups of students are formed and one writer is picked to represent the group. The group is either given a topic to discuss or questions to answer. As the group discusses the topic or the questions, the writer records what is being said. For example, in Science, students might be asked to discuss what factors influence the weather in Manitoba and across Canada and their impacts. As the groups discuss, the writer in each group, records what the rest of the members are sharing. The writer should also be involved in the discussion. At the end of the session, bring it together as a class and have each group present their findings. 1. Form groups of students (4-5, depending on the size of your class). 2. Have each group pick a designated writer. 3. Give students a time limit (Example, 10-15 minutes). 4. Post the topic/questions on the board or give a hand out with the topic/questions on it (not each group needs to discuss the same topic or questions, each group could be given a different related topic or question). 5. Have students discuss topic (writer recording responses). 6. Once students have finished, have each group present their findings. |
