Unsent Letters
Outcomes Met: Grade 5 Science 5-2-09, Grade 5 Math 5.N.8.
Unsent Letters is a strategy that can be used in any subject area. It is a neat way for students to demonstrate their learning. Students are asked to write letters in response to material they are learning or studying. Using this strategy requires students to use their imagination. For example, in a math class, Sally could write her dear friend Emily about how one would go about showing numbers with decimals as a picture. Or in science, Johnny could write George describing his experiment in which he had to identify reversible and non-reversible changes that could be made to substances. 1. Present students with a topic, concept, or idea that they can write about. 2. Have students decide who they would like to write a letter to. 3. Have students write the letter (encourage lots of creativity as they write). 4. The letter can be handed in for assessment. It is a great way to see whether students are understanding a concept or idea correctly or not. |
