Talking Circles

Talking circles can be used basically in any subject area. Talking circles are basically what they sound like. It can be done either in small groups or with the whole class, where students gather in a circle, and discuss the topic that they are given. Each students gets a turn to talk, while the rest of the students listen. You can even pass around a "talking rock" or any object to indicate who is talking. If this is done in small groups, make sure that you bring the class back together as a whole and answer any unanswered questions or to further discuss. For example, in a science classroom, gather students in a circle to discuss how weather can affect human activities and what alternatives could be. 1. Have students gather in small groups and sit in a circle (Set a time limit). 2.Present them with the topic to discuss. 3.Have student discuss the topic. Make sure each student gets a chance to speak. 4.When students are finished, bring it back together as a whole class. This can also be done as a whole class (Same steps apply) |
