Sketch to Stretch
Outcomes Met: Grade 5 Science 5-1-14, 5-1-01
Sketch to Stretch can be used in any content area. This strategy is used to help students make connections between a piece of text and themselves. In Science, the teacher could read an article about healthy living or body image to the students. As the teacher finishes, students pick out an important concept or idea from what was read and they make a sketch as to what they thought was important. For example, an article could talk about the glamorization of smoking in films. Students would then draw a picture that is related to the topic. Make sure that you take a break in between sketching to stretch with the students! Once students finish, they describe why they chose to draw that particular image and what connection it has to themselves. 1. Teacher reads a selected piece of text. 2. Give student the sketch to stretch hand out. 3. Students begin to sketch what they thought was important from the text. 4. In the middle of students sketching, have them stand up and do some stretching (this is a good brain break for them). 5. Have them continue and finish their drawing. 6. Have students describe why they drew what they drew, why it is important, and what connection it has to their lives.
